Grobowa inspiracja A grave inspiration
Edynburg, Szkocja, rok 1841. Pewien twórca przechadza się po Canongate Churchyard (cmentarzu przykościelnym), spoglądając na nagrobki. Nagle jeden z nich przykuwa jego uwagę: zapisane na nim nazwisko jest bardzo charakterystyczne. Mężczyzna wyciąga więc notatnik i zapisuje je – kto wie, może kiedyś będzie mógł je wykorzystać? Jednocześnie zwraca uwagę na dopisek na płycie: „meal man”, czyli „sprzedawca jedzenia”. Jednak czy to przez kiepski stan nagrobka, czy też przez własną nieuwagę, nasz bohater mylnie odczytuje tę frazę jako „mean man” – „skąpiec”. Nieświadomy swojego błędu, zapisuje w notatniku następujące zdanie: „Być zapamiętanym na wieczność jedynie za to, że było się skąpcem, zdaje się być najdobitniejszym świadectwem zmarnowanego życia.”
Jakiś czas później wspomniany przeze mnie twórca wykorzystał znalezione nazwisko, lekko je tylko zmieniając, w jednym ze swoich najbardziej popularnych dzieł. Skąpstwo oryginalnego właściciela tego miana, choć mylnie mu przypisane, także okazało się „przydatne” w kreacji postaci, którą mam na myśli. Ciekawa jestem, czy zgadniecie co to za osoba i kto jest jej kreatorem…
Edinburgh, Scotland, the year 1841. A creator walks around the Canongate Churchyard (a graveyard), looking at the tombstones. Suddenly one of them draws his attention: the name on it is very characteristic. The man pulls out a notebook and writes it down – who knows, maybe someday he will be able to use it? At the same time, he draws attention to the note on the album: „meal man”, or „food seller”. However, whether due to the poor condition of the tombstone or by his own inattention, our character mistakenly reads this phrase as „mean man” – „miser”. Unaware of his error, he writes the following sentence in the notebook: „To be remembered through eternity only for being a mean man seemed the greatest testimony to a life wasted.”
Sometime later, the artist mentioned by me used the found name, changing it only slightly, in one of his most popular works. The miserliness of the original owner of this name, though mistakenly attributed to him, also turned out to be „useful” in the creation of the figure that I have in mind. I wonder if you’ll guess what person it is and who its creator is…
