Jednak kiedy w końcu miało to miejsce, ludzie wcale nie mówili o strojach zaproszonych dam ani o prawdopodobnych małżeństwach, które mogą wyniknąć ze spotkań przybyłych mężczyzn z pięknymi paniami. Uwagę gości, a także tych, z którymi podzielili się oni tą informacją, przykuło pewne SKANDALICZNE wydarzenie. Oto co się stało…
Na balu pojawił się lord Morgan – postać znana w okolicy i szanowana przez wszystkich. Żona barona Hoyinga zaprosiła również swoją przyjaciółkę, pannę Greenhall – młodą kobietę, która już niebezpiecznie zbliżała się do tego wieku, w którym znajomi zaczęliby z niej szydzić, gdyby nie znalazła sobie męża. Lord Morgan i panna Greenhall zostali sobie przedstawieni i widać było, że mężczyzna zainteresował się nowopoznaną osobą. Zaczął z nią rozmawiać, tańczyć – raz, drugi… Krótko po czwartym tańcu oboje musieli ze wstydem opuścić towarzystwo, ścigani szeptami:
– Jakie to nieprzyzwoite! Nie podejrzewałem jej o lekkie obyczaje!
– Zdawałoby się, że to taka urocza osoba, a to wilk w owczej skórze! Kokota! Nic dziwnego, że męża dotąd nie znalazła!
– Co też pan opowiada? To lord Morgan nie ma wstydu! Tak się zachowuje, jakby o etykiecie zupełnie zapomniał!
W ten właśnie sposób reputacja lorda Morgana legła w gruzach, a panna Greenhall i jej rodzice musieli zmienić miejsce zamieszkania, aby kobieta mogła kontynuować poszukiwanie męża. Po zaistniałej sytuacji lord nie chciał mieć z nią nic do czynienia, ponieważ, jak twierdził, „nie chciał wiązać się, ani nawet zawierać bliższej znajomości, z kimś, przez kogo stracił swoją pozycję społeczną.” Czemu się tak wyraził? O jaki skandal chodziło?
March 1824, London, England. The whole city has been roaring about the ball which was to be held in the house of Baron Hoying and his wife for weeks. However, when it finally happened, people did not talk about the costumes of the invited ladies, nor about the likely marriages that may arise from the meetings of the men who arrived with the beautiful ladies. The attention of the guests, as well as those with whom they shared this information, caught a certain SCANDALIC event. Here’s what happened…
At the ball, Lord Morgan appeared – a figure known in the area and respected by everyone. Baron Hoying’s wife also invited her friend, Miss Greenhall – a young woman who was already dangerously approaching the age in which her friends would sneer at her if she did not find herself a husband. Lord Morgan and Miss Greenhall were introduced to each other and it was obvious that the man was interested in the newcomer. He started to talk to her, dance with her – once, twice… Shortly after the fourth dance both of them had to leave their company in shame, followed by whispers:
„How indecent it is! I did not suspect her of light customs!”
„It would seem that she is such a lovely person, and it is a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Courtesan! No wonder she has not found herself a husband yet”
„What are you talking about, sir? It is Lord Morgan who has no shame! It behaves as if it has completely forgotten about the etiquette!”
It was in this way that Lord Morgan’s reputation was ruined, and Miss Greenhall and her parents had to change their place of residence so that the woman could continue to search for a husband.
