Niezwykły uczeń Unusual student
Pierwszy dzień roku szkolnego. Elysian Heights Elementary School w Echo Park (California, USA) wypełnia się dziećmi, przygotowującymi się do rozpoczęcia nauki. Przed drzwiami budynku stawiają się jednak także… reporterzy z lokalnej stacji telewizyjnej. Czekają oni na jednego z uczniów tej szkoły. Dlaczego? Jest to postać bardzo znana w sąsiedztwie. Przez cały rok szkolny dostaje od swoich fanów około 100 listów dziennie. Wszystkie one są kierowane na adres placówki. No właśnie, a dlaczego nie wysyła się ich do miejsca zamieszkania tego ucznia? Powód jest prosty, a jednocześnie dość dziwny: w czasie, kiedy szkoła jest czynna, mieszka on w budynku. A kiedy zaczynają się wakacje, uczeń ten po prostu… znika! Dlatego właśnie reporterzy czekają teraz przed drzwiami, aby uchwycić moment jego powrotu. A najciekawsze jest to, że nasz bohater uczęszcza do Elysian Elementary już dużo dłużej, niż inni uczniowie – i to mimo, że wcale nie ma problemów z nauką!
Kim jest ten niezwykły osobnik?
Opisany w zagadce „osobnik” wcale nie jest człowiekiem, tylko… kotem. Urodził się w roku 1947, a 9 lat później zabłąkał się do Elysian Heights Elementary School. Po raz pierwszy zauważono go w sali numer 8, dlatego pracownicy i uczniowie zaczęli nazywać go „Room 8”. Gdy zdechł w roku 1968, rzeczywiście był już bardzo znany w okolicy. Pochowano go w Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park, a Los Angeles Times poświęcił mu 3 kolumny. Nawiązania do niego pojawiły się w filmie Big Cat, Little Cat (Duży Kot, Mały Kot) oraz książce dla dzieci A Cat Called Room 8 (Kot zwany Sala 8).

The first day of the school year. Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park (California, USA) is filled with children getting ready to go to school. However, in front of the building’s door, there are also… reporters from the local TV station. They are waiting for one of the students at this school. Why? This figure is very famous in the neighbourhood. Throughout the school year, he receives about 100 letters a day from his fans. They are all directed to the address of the facility. Well, why aren’t they sent to this student’s place of residence? The reason is simple and at the same time quite strange: while the school is open, he lives in the building. And when the holiday starts, this student just… disappears! That’s why the reporters are now waiting outside the door to capture the moment of his return. And the most interesting thing is that our hero has been attending Elysian Elementary for much longer than other students – even though he has no learning difficulties!
Who is this unusual individual?
The „individual” described in the riddle is not a human at all, but… a cat. He was born in 1947 and nine years later he wandered into the Elysian Heights Elementary School. He was first spotted in Room 8, so staff and students began to call him „Room 8”. When he died in 1968, he was indeed already very famous in the area. He was buried at the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park, and the Los Angeles Times devoted 3 columns to him. References to him appeared in the movie Big Cat, Little Cat and the children’s book A Cat Called Room 8.
