Mroczny sekret wsi Złe Mięso
Dark secret of the village of Złe Mięso

Wczoraj przypadkowo znalazłam w serwisie YouTube na filmik „Top 10 Weirdest Place Names in Poland” („10 najdziwniejszych nazw miejsc w Polsce”).

Jeśli chcecie obejrzeć filmik, który zainspirował mnie do napisania mojego tekstu, znajdziecie go tutaj.

Yesterday I accidentally found the video „Top 10 Weirdest Place Names in Poland” on YouTube.  Its creator provided literal translations of 10 names of Polish towns and villages into English, along with information about where they came from.

The first place in this list was taken by the village of Złe Mięso („Evil Meat) in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It first appeared in official documents under the German name Boszfleyth (in 1480), and 15 years later as „Bösem Fleisch” (German „böse” = „bad”, „evil”, „angry”; „das Fleisch” = „meat”). In 1585 it was recorded in the Polish version as Liemieszo. In 1664, it was already known under the name which was a literal translation of the newer German-language variant. Officially, all these terms come from the surname of the owner of the local inn, who was German. But there is also a legend that links them to something much more macabre. Listen…

The village of Złe Mięso is located on the Wda River. As in most towns and villages, you can also find an inn here. A long, long time ago, after one of the numerous wars, the owner of this tabernacle changed. After some time, it was noticed that some of the travellers who stopped to rest in this place no longer appeared at their destination. So the building itself, as well as its surroundings and the owner, started being observed. Finally, a dark secret hidden by the innkeeper was discovered. It ended with his death on the gallows, and the inn was demolished. If the whole case got more publicity, then many of the guests who stayed there during this period must have wondered afterwards if they had contributed to the death of these unfortunates… Why do you think, why?

Answer

According to this legend, the innkeeper had killed and robbed some travellers who wanted to spend the night in this place. He added the meat from their bodies to the dishes prepared for other guests. Hence the name of the village of Złe Mięso (Evil Meat).

I found the information about the previous names of that village in this Wikipedia article. If you want to watch the video which inspired me to write my text, you can find it here.
