Dziwny warunek pisarki
The writer's strange condition

A writer, whose works have always been best-sellers, sold the manuscript of the next work to the publisher. This book also became very popular, but it happened only 40 years later – despite the fact that all the earlier ones gained popularity almost immediately. And all this because of one strange condition that the author gave to the publisher, so as not to betray the secret contained in her other work. What is going on?

Answer

The author was Agatha Christie, and the said book was „The Mousetrap” – a work based on the play of the same title which she had written earlier. The writer sold the manuscript provided that it will be released only after removing the play from the posters. She wanted to preserve the identity of the killer referred to in both works a secret from the readers (who most likely would choose also to the theater to see a play) this way. However, neither Christie herself nor her publisher  foresaw „The Mousetrap” to be such a success and come down from the posters after 4 decades.
