Zawsze ten sam wynik
Always the same result

Poznajcie Huberta i Andrzeja, dwóch uczniów ostatniej klasy liceum.

– Dobrze. A więc weź sobie kartkę i długopis – mówi Hubert. Gdy przed Andrzejem leżą potrzebne przedmioty, matematyk kontynuuje: – Napisz w słupku trzy dowolne liczby 3-cyfrowe.

Meet Hubert and Andrzej, two students of last year of high school. Hubert attends a class with a mathematic profile, he is fascinated by riddles and puzzles which are based on numbers. Andrew is, however, typical student of humanities, who knows the biographies of all the important characters from Poland and abroad. Despite these differences, the boys are friends and they are like brothers to each other.

One Saturday the high school students meet Hubert’s house to wind up after a hard week at school. The exams are getting closer, the teachers do not leave them alone – they are trying to help students in the repetition of material that tey will need. Now, however, after 5 days of studying, both men want to temporarily avoid having to think about what soon awaits them. As soon as they enter Hubert’s room, the mathematician smiles mysteriously.

„I have something for you. Do you know that recently I’ve learned to foresee the results of calculations on large numbers without a calculator or even writing the calculations on the sheet? I’m becoming better and better, I’m very rarely wrong… It’s enough for me to write the numbers down – that’s all I need.”

Andrew looks at his friend with a skeptical facial expression. He knows that his „brother” can solve complex math problems, but still he has had to use the calculator for that do far. Well… you can expect everything with somebody like that.

„Show me how you do it,” he asks then.

„Alright. So grab a pen and paper,” says Hubert. When the needed objects are lying in front of Andrzej, the mathematician continues, „Write down any three 3-digit numbers in a column.”

The humanist thinks for a moment and writes on the sheet:

  • 450
  • 376
  • 684

„And what now?” he asks, looking at the „master”.

„Now I will add three next 3-digit numbers underneath, and the sum of all six numbers will certainly be the 2997. You have a calculator, check later. I know that you will not count this in mind, and I want you to believe me,” smiles Hubert. Then he writes down the numbers. When Andrzej checks the result, it really amounts to 2997 How did it happen that Hubert could foresee this?
