Sir Gawain i Zielony Rycerz Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
„Wniesiono pierwsze danie wśród wrzasku trąb i powiewających sztandarów, grzmotu bębnów i przenikliwych piszczałek.
Wiele serc podskoczyło na ten głos. Wniesiono wykwintne potrawy, kosztowne mięsiwa, obfitość świeżutkiego jadła na tak wielu półmiskach, że trudno było znaleźć miejsce przed ludźmi, by postawić srebrne naczynia ze smacznym jedzeniem. Każdy brał, w czym najbardziej gustował. Przy każdej parze stało dwanaście talerzy, dobre piwo i roziskrzone wino” – oto słowa nieznanego poety, zachowane po dziś dzień w zmurszałych kronikach, a poświęcone jednej z niezliczonych uczt na zamku Camelot.
Podczas uczty noworocznej – o której mowa – król Artur nie wziął jednakże do ust ani kęsa. Długo kaprysił i marudził, zanim wreszcie oświadczył, że nie tknie posiłku, dopóki nie zobaczy jakowych dziwów niezwykłych, albo posłucha przedziwnej opowieści.
Posmutniała piękna królowa Ginewra, a wraz z nią nadobne służebne. Rycerze Okrągłego Stołu siedzący na ławach w wielkiej sali jadalnej poczęli spoglądać po sobie niespokojnie. Znad talerzy i mis unosiła się para coraz delikatniejsza, zamierająca. Czyżby znów trzeba było mrozić sobie żołądki jadłem wystygłym?
Nagle u wejścia wybuchł przeraźliwy tumult i oto w przestronnej komnacie pojawił się na rumaku olbrzymi rycerz w zielonej zbroi. Niesamowity rycerz w lewej ręce trzymał ciemnozieloną gałąź kłującego ostrokrzewu, a w prawej topór z zielonym trzonkiem. Rumak potrząsał głową i ogonem o barwie soczystej zieleni.
Tajemniczy jeździec podjechał do królewskiego stołu ustawionego na podwyższeniu i z wysokości siodła rozejrzał się wokoło. Pośród Rycerzy Okrągłego Stołu zapanowało milczenie, pełne oczekiwania i niepokoju.
– Chciałeś usłyszeć opowieść niezwykłą, królu Arturze? – zagrzmiał nieznajomy. – Posłuchaj więc słów moich. A i wy wszyscy bacznie uszu nadstawcie.
To mówiąc przybysz uniósł topór do góry i dzierżąc go tak, począł snuć wypełnioną grozą opowieść:
– Nocą, dnia trzynastego, ostatniego miesiąca roku, podczas burzy i wichury szalejącej na równinach lesistych, w pobliżu wybrzeża morskiego wyrosły spod ziemi cztery zamki, bogate budowle ustawione w szeregu, godne, by mieszkali w nich najzacniejsi rycerze o nieustraszonych sercach. Myślę, że w pierwszym z nich mógłby zamieszkać – by władać okolicą – Gawain, w drugim Tristan, w trzecim Lohengrin, wreszcie w czwartym, najbardziej zbliżonym ku morzu, Lancelot. Jednakże wiedzcie, że w podziemiach każdego z tych zamków mieszkają zaczarowane zwierzęta. W podziemiach warowni sąsiadującej z zamkiem przeznaczonym Tristanowi mieszka kogut, który pieje tylko na zwycięstwo. Żmija zielonooka mieszka w zamczysku położonym najdalej od siedziby godnej Lancelota. Jaszczur płomienny nie może żyć w sąsiedztwie żmii zielonookiej. Pomyślcie teraz, o biesiadnicy zgromadzeni przy jadle i napojach, w podziemiach którego zamku znajduje się najbardziej niebezpieczne ze wszystkich zwierząt, bazyliszek! – Stwór zabijający istoty nieostrożne wzrokiem i oddechem? – Tu opowiadający opuścił topór ku ziemi, rozejrzał się wokoło po raz ostatni i dorzucił:
– Postaraj się odpowiedzieć na me pytanie, królu, i wy, rycerze, bo wkrótce zobaczymy się ponownie. A wtedy przekonam się, jakie umysły ukrywacie pod żelaznymi szyszakami. Do zobaczenia więc…
Po tych słowach Zielony Rycerz zaśmiał się szyderczo, spiął rumaka ostrogami i zniknął. Gdyby nie głuchy śmiech tłukący się jeszcze echem pod sklepieniem komnaty, można by przypuszczać, że owa scena przywidziała się po prostu gościom króla Artura.
A kto z was potrafi ustalić, w którym z czterech zamków ukrywa się bazyliszek?

WNIOSKI:
- Kogut mieszka w sąsiedztwie zamku Tristana – to znaczy: w zamku pierwszym albo trzecim (Gawaina albo Lohengrina).
- Żmija przebywa najdalej od zamku Lancelota, musi więc przebywać w zamku pierwszym – Gawaina.
- Skoro żmija mieszka w podziemiach zamku pierwszego, kogut musi przebywać w podziemiach warowni trzeciej.
- Jaszczur nie może mieszkać w sąsiedztwie żmii, więc nie może żyć w zamku numer dwa – to oznacza, że przebywa w zamku czwartym.
- Wniosek ostatni i najważniejszy: jedyne wolne podziemia to te pod zamkiem Tristana (czyli drugim) i w nich mieszka bazyliszek.

plus beer or wine, or both!” – these are the words of an unknown poet, preserved to this day in the annals rotten, and dedicated to one of the countless feasts on Camelot. During the New Year’s feast – referred to – King Arthur did not take, however, a bite to his mouth. Long did he sulk and whine before he finally said that he would not touch food until he sees the some unusual wonders or listens to strange stories. Sad did queen Guinevere become and with her the ministerial tat. Knights of the Round Table sitting on benches in a large dining hall began to look at each other uneasily. From between the platters and bowls rose more delicate, dying steam. Would they have to freeze their stomachs with the cooled down food again?
Suddenly, there was a shrill tumult at the entrance and here in the spacious chamber appeared on the giant steed knight in the green armour. Amazing Knight held a dark green prickly holly branch in his left hand, and in the right one axe with a green handle. The charger shook his head and tail the colour of lush greenery. The mysterious rider rode up to the king’s table set on a platform and looked around from the height of the saddle. There was silence among the Knights of the Round Table, full of expectation and anxiety. “You wanted to hear the remarkable story, King Arthur?” thundered the stranger. “So Listen to my words. And you all listen closely too.” So saying, the stranger raised his axe up and wielding it like that, he began reeling off the story filled with horror:
“At night, on the thirteenth day, in the last month of the year, during a storm and the gale raging on the wooded plains, near the sea coast four castles grew out of the ground, rich structures aligned, worthy for the renowned knights of intrepid hearts to live in them. I think, in the first one of them could live – to rule the surroundings – Gawain, in the second Tristan, Lohengrin in the third, and finally in the fourth, the closest to the sea, Lancelot. However, know you that in the basement of each of these enchanted castles live the enchanted animals. In the basement adjacent to the castle fortress designed for Tristan lives the rooster that crows just for the victory. The green-eyed viper lives in the castle the farthest from the headquarters of the decent Lancelot. The fiery lizard cannot live in the neighbourhood of the green-eyed viper. Think now, oh revellers gathered at the food and beverages, in the basement of which castle is the most dangerous of all animals, basilisk! – The creature killing the careless creatures with its eyes and breath?” – Here the teller lowered the axe to the ground, looked around one last time and added: “Try to answer my question, King, and you, knights, because soon we’ll see each other again. And then I will make sure what minds you cover under the iron helmets. See you then…”
After these words the Green Knight sneered, spurred his horse with the spurs and disappeared. If it was not for the dull, pounding laughter still echoing under the vault of the chamber, one might have supposed that the guests of king Arthur simply saw things.
And whoever of you is able to determine which of the four castles basilisk lives in?

CONCLUSIONS:
1. Rooster lives in the neighbourhood of Tristan’s castle – that is to say: the first or third castle (Gawain’s or Lohengrin’s).
2. Viper stays far away from the castle of Lancelot; therefore, it must stay in the first castle – Gawain’s.
3. If a viper lives in the basement of the first castle, the rooster shall be kept in the basement of the first fortress.
4. Lizard cannot live in the neighbourhood of the viper, so it cannot live in the castle number two – that means it stays in the fourth castle.
5. The last and most important conclusion: the only free basement is under the castle of Tristan (the second one) and that is where the basilisk lives.
