„Przesyłka dla kameleona”, Daria Doncowa
"A parcel for the chameleon", Darya Dontsova

Nieszczęśliwy wypadek i początek zagadki

Niby nic dziwnego, prawda?

Nowi bohaterowie

No więc „pani detektyw” wyciąga dolary z banku i zabiera się do poszukiwań zaginionego brata, Jegora.

Introduction

If you follow my entries in the tab „Worth reading” on this page carefully, then the character named Evlampiya Andreyevna Romanov is already known to you. She appeared in two books by Darya Dontsova which I have recently described. And since you already know her, you know that one of her characteristics is the ease of getting into trouble… and the other – excessive willingness to help solve problems of others, even if she herself will have even more unpleasantness.

An unfortunate accident and beginning of the mystery

„Lampa” still lives with her friend Katia and her family: the younger son Kirył, the older son Sierioża and the wife of the latter, Julia, as well as their „zoo” – cats, dogs, etc. One day Julia breaks her leg in the ankle in an unfortunate accident, which forces her to spend some time in the hospital. She is placed in the room with three other girls. Quickly, however, she signs out from there at his own request due to the terrible conditions prevailing in this sanctuary of restoring health. But something strange happens before that: one of the girls from this room, Irina, tells Evlampiya a strange story. Nastia, Julia’s second neighbour, has recently been transferred to another hospital. She had a brother and she wanted Ira to give him the money. A large sum in dollars! The girl does not want to have anything to do with it. She gives „Lampa” a key to the bank box and asks her to take care of this matter. And shortly after…, she dies. It’s not surprising, right? Sometimes, a hospitalized person comes down from this world. It’s just that this young person went to the hospital with a fracture, and died of… thrombosis, a disease that was completely unrelated to it!

New characters

So „Mrs Detective” pulls the dollars from the bank and goes to search for his missing brother, Yegor. In the meantime, it turns out that Nastia has also died. From thrombosis, just like the other girl. Is this just a strange coincidence? Or maybe not? „Lampa” has no time to think about it for a long time because a new character appears on the horizon: the mysterious Stella Petrovna Yegorova… Who is she? What is the relationship with Nastya and her brother? Everything starts to get complicated… But do not worry! Detective Romanowa will find a solution to this puzzle, although it will turn out to be much more surprising than expected when she promised help to Irina. And finding it makes it more difficult to deal with four of Katia’s friends who have to live with her for some time, and their dog. This results in various less and more comic situations…

„A parcel for the chameleon”: what’s so extraordinary about it?

„A parcel for the chameleon” is yet another book for which it is difficult to find a better label than the term used by its author – „a fairy tale for adults”. A multi-layered intrigue with a surprising solution, „colourful” characters, a peculiar language… All this together creates a mood that is hard to resist. Some may say that the characters created by Doncowa are too exaggerated, not very „real”, and the language is too far from what can be read in the „classics of the genre”. But this work is not a typical crime story, but a „humorous crime story”, just like the works of Polish author Joanna Chmielewska. Humorous elements that appear in it are literally inscribed in the name of this genre. And if the characters were different, they would not fit the concept that the author decided on. A lot of the comedy we see here is the character’s comedy. And I must admit that in this volume of the series about Eulampia, it was one of the elements that interested me the most. Lusia, her husband and two daughters and a dog are the characters that attract attention, „make noise”. In English, they could be described as „comic relief”: a release, a humorous episode put between serious episodes (and in this case – comic characters appearing in the book about „serious” subjects). In the previous two books, it was Evlampiya who served as a character of this type; Kirył also exhibited comic features, but they were not as developed.

Ending

So, if you want to know the answers to the questions that I asked earlier, or are just curious about this kind of literature, then „A parcel for the chameleon” should definitely be on your list of books to read. I wonder what you’ll think about it…
