Czy słyszeliście kiedyś o Golemie? Nie? Olbrzym z mułu i gliny, stworzony przez rabbiego Löwa w Pradze, w czasach Rudolfa II. Ożywiony wypowiedzianym przez niego słowem „szem” (imię Boga, którego nie wolno wypowiadać) i „słowem życia” wsadzonym mu do ust. Miał „ochraniać społeczność, odkrywać zbrodnie i im zapobiegać”. Któregoś wieczoru Löw zapomniał wyjąć „słowo życia” z ust Golema, który w przypływie szału zniszczył jego dom. Dopiero gdy rabbi pozbawił go znaku, olbrzym zamienił się w kupkę gliny, która później spoczęła w Synagodze Staro-Nowej.
Określenie „golem” po raz pierwszy pojawiło się w tekstach Eliezera z Wormacji (XVIII wiek); oznaczało ono sztuczny twór. Autor podaje szczegółowe instrukcje dotyczące stworzenia takiej istoty i powołania jej do życia. Do XVI wieku Golem był symbolem istoty chroniącej Żydów przed prześladowaniami. W opowieściach z czasów średniowiecza był on opisywany jako idealny sługa – jego jedyną wadą było to, że zbyt dosłownie brał polecenia twórcy.
Dopiero w XIX stuleciu odkryto związek legendy o rabbim, który stworzył Golema, z prawdziwą postacią; według wersji z tego okresu rabin Löw miał pewnej nocy wdziać białą szatę i wraz ze swoim zięciem udał się nad brzeg Wełtawy. Tam stworzył Golema za pomocą zaklęć i czterech żywiołów: wody, ognia, ziemi i powietrza.
Miejscem w Pradze, które najczęściej łączy się z obecnością alchemików, astrologów i uczonych w czasach kiedy żył rabbi Löw, jest Złota Uliczka na Hradczanach.
Legenda o Golemie jest tematem wykorzystywanym w literaturze także i dziś. Dowód? Pamiętacie serię „Kuzynki Kruszewskie” Andrzeja Pilipiuka, o której kiedyś pisałam? W tomie zatytułowanym „Księżniczka” ukazane zostały 2 różne Golemy. Jeden został stworzony „nieudolnie”, jako „kukła” wykonująca powierzone jej zadanie, po czym miała zostać unicestwiona; drugi powstał z dopełnieniem wszelkich rytuałów – ten dostał zadanie, które było bardzo ważne dla jego pana. Oto jak drugi z nich opisywał Golemy, sposoby ich tworzenia i cechy, po których można je rozpoznać:
„– Hmm… Czyli następnym razem może zaskoczyć nas na ulicy? Nie da się go jakoś wyłuskać z tłumu?
– Ma kilka charakterystycznych cech. Nazywamy je stygmatami golema. Po nich daje się go rozpoznać. Nawet w tłumie…
– Jakie to cechy? – zapytała księżniczka.
– Stygmaty są psychiczne i fizyczne. Golem jest bezpłodny, nie odczuwa pociągu seksualnego, najczęściej ma niewykształcone narządy rodne. Czasem nie umie się wysłowić, jąka się lub mówi rzeczy niezrozumiałe. I nie czuje przynależności do rodzaju ludzkiego. Jego ciało jest doskonalsze niż ciało człowieka. Może nie spać przez wiele dni, wytrzymuje niezwykle długo bez wody i pożywienia. Można go zamurować żywcem, a on i tak przetrwa całe lata, gdyż nie potrzebuje powietrza. Ma płuca, ale służą one tylko po to, by mógł wydawać dźwięki. Gdy nie mówi, nie oddycha. Prawidłowo wykonany w zasadzie nie różni się od ludzi, można go jednak rozpoznać po tym, że ma pewne cechy szczególne. Na klatce piersiowej w okolicy serca posiada zagłębienie w kształcie misy. Na czole widnieje u niego znak w kształcie litery Y lub X. Jego lewa stopa jest odrobinę bezwładna. I jest długowieczny. Może żyć nawet sto pięćdziesiąt lat.
– Jasna cholera! – Katarzyna domyśliła się pierwsza.
Zerwała się od stołu, wywracając krzesło. Pozostali też odskoczyli do tyłu. W następnym ułamku sekundy trzymała już w ręce pistolet, a koniec lufy celował w czoło starca.
– Pociski z ołowianymi czubkami, rusz się tylko, a wpakuję w ciebie dwanaście! – krzyknęła.
Spojrzał na nią zupełnie obojętnie.
– I naprawdę sądzisz, że mnie to zabije? – Uśmiechnął się. – Przeżyłem gorsze rzeczy niż odstrzelenie głowy.
Stanisława poczuła, jakby połknęła kostkę lodu. Jej żołądek promieniował chłodem.
Wystarczy, że zdmuchnie świecę, pomyślała. W ciemności wykończy nas w kilka sekund.
– Usiądźcie – poprosił łagodnym, spokojnym głosem. – Gdybym chciał was zabić lub gdybym dostał takie polecenie, dawno byście nie żyli.
Alchemik zdecydował się pierwszy.

Można też zrobić wszystko po partacku… Tak jak Jehuda ben Becalel z czeskiej Pragi, który do tego był tak nieostrożny, że o jego doświadczeniach dowiedzieli się goje… Można to zrobić szybko, zwalić na stos kupę gliny, ulepić z niej kukłę, napisać na dłoni kilka hebrajskich liter i tchnąć w nią życie pobawione rozumu. Tak wykonany golem będzie miał wszystkie cechy prawdziwego, ale nadawać się będzie do jednorazowej akcji. Można go wysłać, by ukręcił komuś głowę, i trzeba go zniszczyć, nim nadejdzie czas szabasu.
– Dlaczego? – Monika pierwsza zadała pytanie.
– Będzie próbował dostać się do synagogi, a nie wolno mu tego uczynić, gdyż, podobnie jak ja, pozbawiony jest duszy.
– Jak to, to pan… – wykrztusiła Katarzyna.
– Duszę może dać tylko Bóg, a mnie uczyniła ręka człowieka. Jest też jeszcze jedna cecha golema. Brak wolnej woli. Mnie zakazano chodzić do synagogi, dlatego, mimo przemożnej chęci, pozostaję tutaj.
– Brak wolnej woli, czy to znaczy…? – zapytał Mistrz.

– Minęło prawie siedemdziesiąt lat.

The Gold Lane in Prague
Have you ever heard of the Golem? You haven’t? The giant of silt and clay, created by Rabbi Löw in Prague, in the times of Rudolf II. Animated by the word „shem” (the name of God which cannot be uttered) uttered by him and the „word of life” put in his mouth. He was „to protect the community, to discover crimes and to prevent them”. One evening Löw forgot to remove the „word of life” from the mouth of the Golem, who destroyed his house in a fit of rage. Only after the rabbi took his sign, the giant turned into a pile of clay, which later came to rest in the Old-New Synagogue.
The term „golem” first appeared in the texts Eliezer of Worms (18th century); it meant an artificial creation. The author gives detailed instructions for the creation of such a creature and the appointment of its life. Until the sixteenth century, the Golem was a symbol of the essence of protecting Jews from persecution. In the stories of the Middle Ages, it was described as a perfect servant – his only disadvantage was that it took the commands of the creator too literally.
Only in the nineteenth century the relationship legend of the rabbi who created Golem with real character was discovered; according to version from this period Rabbi Löw wore a white robe one night and went to the bank of the Vltava River with his son-in-law. There he created the Golem with spells and the four elements: water, fire, earth, and air.
The place in Prague which is frequently connected with the presence of alchemists, astrologers, and scholars in the days when rabbi Löw lived is the Golden Lane at Prague Castle.
The legend of the Golem is the theme used in the literature even today. Evidence? Do you remember the series „Kruszewski cousins” by Andrzej Pilipiuk, about which I once wrote? In the volume entitled „Princess” 2 different Golems were shown. One was created „clumsily”, as a „puppet” performing the task entrusted to it, after which it was to be destroyed; the second was made with the completion of all the rituals – that one got the job which was very important for his master. Here’s how the second one described the golems, their methods of creating, and features by which they can be identified:
“’Hmm… So the next time it may surprise us on the street? Can it not be somehow plucked from the crowd?’
’It has some characteristics. We call them the golem’s stigmata. It can be identified by them. Even in a crowd…’
’What are the characteristics?’ asked the princess.
’There are mental and physical stigmata. Golem is sterile, does not feel sexual attraction, mostly has its genital organs not developed. Sometimes it cannot express itself, stutters or says incomprehensible things. And it does not feel belonging to the human race. His body is more perfect than the human body. It is able not to sleep for many days, it can withstand extremely long without food and water. It can be bricked up alive, and he still survives for years, because it do not need air. It has lungs, but they serve only for it be able to produce sounds. When it does not talk, it does not breathe. Properly executed, in principle, it is not different from humans, but it can be identified by the fact that it has some special features. It has a depression in the shape of a bowl on the chest in the heart area. It bears a sign in the shape of the letter Y or X on its forehead. His left foot is a little limp. And it is long-lived. It can live up to one hundred and fifty years.’
’Bloody hell!’ Katarzyna guessed first.
She jumped up from the table, knocking the chair over. The others jumped back. In the next split second she held the gun in her hand, and the end of the barrel excelled in the face of the old man.
’Bullets with lead tips, only move, and I’ll have taught you twelve!’ she shouted.
He looked at her indifferently.
’And do you really think it will kill me?’ He smiled. 'I survived worse things than having my head blown off.’

’Golems can be built in two ways,’ the antiquarian carried on the story. 'In a, say, scientific way, giving them a reason, implementing them to the procedures of logical thinking, and even planning for the future. And the other way. So made a golem will have all the qualities of a real one, but it will be suitable for a one-time action. You can send it to wrench someone’s head off, and you have to destroy it before the time of Sabbath comes.
