Na Sępiej Wyspie On the Island of the Vultures
Sępia Wyspa była doskonałym schronieniem dla wolnych ludzi oceanów, korsarzy. Strome, wysokie brzegi, liczne zatoki i zatoczki, tajne przejścia między skałami i mnóstwo rozsianych wokół wyspy raf podwodnych – wszystko to sprawiało, że mieszkańcy wyspy zapomnieli już, jak wygląda uzbrojony Hiszpan – ich wróg odwieczny.
Jednakże skały podwodne groziły nie tylko Hiszpanom, przysparzały wiele utrapień również mieszkańcom Sępiej wyspy. Mało kto odważał się przepłynąć przez labirynt raf bez dobrego przewodnika.
Do najlepszych przewodników należeli bliźniacy, wychowani od dziecka nad brzegiem morskim, Gruby Sam i Tęgi Sem.
Bliźniaków omijano jednak jak zadżumionych. Nikt nie chciał korzystać z ich usług. Nikt nie chciał ich pytać o drogę. Dlaczego? Z prostej przyczyny. Tylko jeden z nich – Tęgi Sem – zawsze mówił prawdę, drugi zaś – Gruby Sam – zawsze kłamał, a że podobni byli do siebie jak dwie krople wody, i do tego ubierali się identycznie – nigdy nie wiadomo było, czy trafi się na kłamcę, czy na prawdomównego.
A jednak był w osiedlu człowiek, który rychło znalazł sposób na bliźniaków. Był nim Długi John. Wystarczyło mu usłyszeć odpowiedź na jedno tylko pytanie postawione jednemu z napotkanych bliźniaków, żeby wiedzieć od razu, którego z nich ma przed sobą. Toteż Długi John nigdy nie miał kłopotów z przeprowadzeniem swego statku pomiędzy groźnymi rafami.
Jakie pytanie należało postawić jednemu z bliźniaków, aby ujawnić, czy rozmówcą jest kłamca, czy prawdomówny?

Aby odgadnąć tożsamość jednego z bliźniaków, wystarczyło zadać mu jakieś bardzo oczywiste pytanie, na które zadający (Długi John bądź ktokolwiek inny) musiał znać odpowiedź. Przykładowo: „Czy mam na sobie koszulę w kolorze…?” (i podać kolor), „Czy moja matka ma na imię…?” (zakładając, oczywiście, że bliźniacy znali odnośną osobę i jej matkę), „Czy teraz pada deszcz?”. Odpowiedź od razu wskazywała, z którym z braci miało się do czynienia.
Island of the Vultures was the perfect refuge for free men of the oceans, the privateers. The steep, high banks, numerous bays and coves, secret passages between the rocks and lots of submerged reefs scattered around the island – all this meant that the islanders have already forgotten how the armed Spaniard – their eternal enemy – looked like.
However, underwater rocks threatened not only the Spaniards, they also conferred many tribulations to the residents of the Island of the Vultures. Few people dared to sail through a maze of reefs without a good guide.
Among the best guides there were the twins, brought up from childhood on the seashore, Fat Sam and Stout Sem.
The twins, however, were evaded like a plague. Nobody wanted to use their services. Nobody wanted to ask them for directions. Why? For a simple reason. Only one of them – Stout Sem – always spoke the truth, and the other – Fat Sam – always lied, and that they were like each other as two drops of water, and to this dressed identically – you never knew whether you got to meet the liar or the truthful one.
And yet there was the man in the settlement who soon found a way for the twins. He was Long John. It was enough for him to hear the answer to only one question, posed to one of the encountered twins, to know immediately which one is in front of him. So Long John never had trouble guiding his ship between the dangerous reefs.
What question was to be put to one of the twins to reveal whether the interlocutor is a liar or a truthful one?

To guess the identity of one of the twins, it was enough to ask him some very obvious question that the asker (Long John or anyone else) had to know the answer to. For example: „Am I wearing a shirt in the color of…?” (and specify the color), „Is my mother’s name…?” (assuming, of course, that the twins knew the person concerned and their mother), „Is it raining now?”. The answer immediately indicated which of the brothers you had to deal with.
