Większość z was zapewne dobrze zna baśnie zebrane przez Wilhelma i Jacoba Grimmów, prawda? Bajki napisane przez Charlesa Perraulta, oparte na motywach ludowych, także są popularne – wystarczy wspomnieć „Czerwonego Kapturka”, „Śpiącą Królewnę”, czy „Kota w Butach”. Mity greckie, choć są opowiadaniami innego rodzaju, na stałe zakorzeniły się w kulturze europejskiej. A czy kiedykolwiek mieliście styczność z podobnymi opowiadaniami z innych krajów? Albo z innych czasów? Jeśli mielibyście na to ochotę, to mam dla was niespodziankę. Przedstawiam wam „Classic Folk Tales from Around the World” – „Klasyczne opowieści ludowe z całego świata”, zbiorek stworzony przez Roberta Nye’a.
Książka ta nie doczekała się oficjalnego tłumaczenia na język polski, jednak nie musicie się tym martwić: tłumaczenia opowiadań wybrane przez autora są napisane prostym językiem, więc łatwo je zrozumieć nawet, jeśli znajomość języka angielskiego nie jest waszą mocną stroną. Mamy tu kilka najpopularniejszych baśni ze zbiorów braci Grimm i Charlesa Perraulta, 3 mity greckie oraz kilka współczesnych greckich opowiastek, opowieści cygańskie, historie z Australii, wysp Fidżi, podania z różnych stron Afryki, Azji i obu Ameryk podzielone pod względem miejsca pochodzenia, bajki z Islandii, oraz kilku różnych krajów europejskich. Możemy także przeczytać kilka podań nordyckich oraz celtyckich (druga grupa została podzielona na opowiadania angielskie, irlandzkie i szkockie). Prawdziwa kopalnia! Każda z sekcji i podsekcji opatrzona jest krótkim wprowadzeniem zawierającym informacje na temat tła kulturowego danej grupy historii. Jeśli podobnie jak ja lubicie czasem przypomnieć sobie smak dzieciństwa, z pewnością jest to książka dla was. Może też być przydatna, jeśli wyczerpały wam się pomysły na historie do opowiadania waszym własnym dzieciom lub tym, z którymi pracujecie.

Most of you probably know the fairy tales collected by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm well, right? Fairy tales written by Charles Perrault, based on folk motifs, are also popular – it’s enough to mention „Little Red Riding Hood”, „Sleeping Beauty” or „Puss in Boots”. Greek myths, although they are stories of a different kind, have firmly rooted in European culture. Have you ever been in contact with similar stories from other countries? Or from other times? If you fancy it, I have a surprise for you. I present to you „Classic Folk Tales from Around the World” – a collection created by Robert Nye.
This book has not been officially translated into Polish [I’m not sure about other languages], but you do not have to worry about it: translations of stories chosen by the author are written in plain language, so it is easy to understand them even if knowledge of English is not your strength. We have here some of the most popular fairy tales from the collections of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, 3 Greek myths as well as several modern Greek stories, gypsy tales, stories from Australia, the islands of Fiji, legends from different parts of Africa, Asia and both Americas divided by place of origin, fairytales from Iceland, and several different European countries. We can also read several Norse and Celtic tales (the second group was broken down into the English, Irish and Scottish stories). A real mine! Each section and subsection is provided with a brief introduction containing information on the cultural background of the given group of stories. If like me, you sometimes like to remember the taste of childhood, then this is a book for you. It can also be useful if you have run out of ideas for stories to tell your children or those with whom you work.
