„Chcę, żeby tak było…” "I want it that way..."
Pięciu mężczyzn stoi w rzędzie. Każdy z nich trzyma w ręce tabliczkę z numerem. Wszyscy patrzą przed siebie – wiedzą, że są obserwowani, choć nie widzą obserwujących ich osób. W pewnej chwili z głośnika zamontowanego w ścianie pomieszczenia rozlega się głos:
– Numer 1, czy mógłbyś zaśpiewać początek „I want it that way”*?
Wywołany mężczyzna wykonuje polecenie, nieco fałszując. Po chwili ten sam głos przerywa mu, nakazując kontynuowanie piosenki człowiekowi „oznaczonemu” numerem 2. To samo powtarza się do momentu, kiedy cała piątka ma za sobą „występy”.
Po drugiej stronie ściany, w którą wpatrują się piosenkarze-amatorzy, młoda kobieta odwraca się do towarzyszącego jej mężczyzny – tego samego, którego głos wcześniej rozbrzmiewał z głośnika. Na sekundę zaciska usta.
– Numer 5 – mówi, na pozór spokojnie, ale jej oczy zdradzają ogrom przeżywanych przez nią emocji. Smutek, gniew, a także… krótki błysk czegoś, co wygląda jak mściwa radość. Jej towarzysz, Jake, patrzy na nią z zainteresowaniem i lekkim powątpiewaniem. On sam musiał przed chwilą zmusić się do profesjonalnego zachowania. Piosenka śpiewana przez stojących za ścianą mężczyzn tak go „wciągnęła”, że zaczął im wtórować. Teraz jednak znów jest poważny. Nie wypada przecież zachowywać się jak błazen przy osobie, która niedawno straciła brata… A on tak właśnie się zachował! Co za wstyd.
– Jest pani pewna? – pyta. Nigdy jeszcze w swojej karierze nie spotkał się z tak niezwykłym sposobem wskazywania osób… Wszystkie podobne sytuacje kończyły się tym, że zaproszony przez niego mężczyzna lub kobieta dokonywał/dokonywała wyboru z grupy 4-5 innych osób, kierując się ich wyglądem. Ale wybieranie na podstawie głosu? Nie, czegoś takiego jeszcze nie było.
– Tak. Numer 5.
Opisana powyżej sytuacja nie jest castingiem do żadnego programu telewizyjnego, choć mogłaby na to wyglądać. Czy potraficie zorientować się, co tu zaszło?

Scena, którą opisałam, to policyjne okazanie. Pięciu mężczyzn stało w przeznaczonym do tego pokoju, a kobieta i towarzyszący jej policjant obserwowali ich przez lustro weneckie. „Numer 5” zabił brata kobiety. Nie potrafiła ona rozpoznać twarzy sprawcy, ale zapamiętała jego głos. Piosenka, którą mieli zaśpiewać podejrzani, była dla niej dodatkowym ułatwieniem, bo właśnie ten utwór nucił zabójca.
Pisząc tę zagadkę, zainspirowałam się sceną z serialu „Brooklyn 9-9”, którą przypadkowo znalazłam w serwisie YouTube. Motyw rozpoznawania sprawcy po głosie wydał mi się bardzo ciekawy. Niestety jak dotąd nie udało mi się obejrzeć ani całego odcinka, w którym to się wydarzyło, ani pozostałych odcinków tego serialu.

Five men are standing in a row. Each of them holds a number plate in their hands. Everyone looks ahead – they know that they are being watched, although they cannot see their followers. At some point, a voice is heard from the loudspeaker installed in the wall of the room:
„Number 1, could you sing the opening of „I want it that way”*?”
The called man carries out the command, singing slightly out of tune. After a while, the same voice interrupts him, ordering the man „marked” with 2 to continue the song. The same thing repeats until all five have their „performances” behind them.
On the other side of the wall on which amateur singers are staring, a young woman turns to the man accompanying her – the same one whose voice had previously sounded from the loudspeaker. She purses her lips for a second.
„Number 5,” she says, seemingly calm, but her eyes betray the enormity of emotions which she’s experiencing. Sadness, anger, and… a brief flash of what looks like vengeful joy. Her companion, Jake, looks at her with interest and slight doubt. Just a moment earlier, he had to force himself to behave professionally. The song that was sung by the men behind the wall „caught” him so that he began to echo them. Now, however, he is serious again. It is not proper to behave like a clown near a person who has recently lost their brother… And he did just that! What a shame.
„Are you sure?” – he asks. Never before in his career has he encountered such an unusual way of pointing people… All similar situations ended with the man or woman whom he had invited was choosing from a group of 4-5 other people, guided by their appearance. But making a choice based on the voice? No, there has never been such a thing before.
„Yes. Number 5.”
The situation described above is not casting for any television program, although it might look like it. Can you understand what happened here?

The scene that I described is a police display. The five men were standing in the room designated for that, and the woman and a policeman accompanying her were watching them through a Venetian mirror. „Number 5” killed the woman’s brother. She couldn’t recognise the perpetrator’s face, but she remembered his voice. The song which the suspects were supposed to sing, was an additional convenience for her because it was this song was hummed by the killer.
Writing this riddle, I was inspired by a scene from the TV series „Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, which I accidentally found on YouTube. The motif of recognizing the perpetrator by his voice seemed very interesting to me. Unfortunately, I have been able to watch neither the entire episode in which it happened nor the remaining episodes of this series so far.
