Paweł zagłębił się w stary fotel dziadka i zamyślił się. Wspomnienia z dzieciństwa znów napłynęły mu do głowy.
– Pawełku, chodź tu do mnie! – dziadek usiadł w fotelu i otworzył „Wyspę Skarbów” Roberta Luisa Stevensona na stronie, na której rozpoczynał się rozdział drugi. Mały chłopiec przybiegł z sąsiedniego pokoju i wskoczył mężczyźnie na kolana.
– To co, czytamy dalej?
– Tak!
– Więc zaczynajmy…
Współczesny, 30-letni Paweł z rozrzewnieniem przypomniał sobie siedmioletniego siebie, z zapartym tchem słuchającego o przygodach piratów. Jego dziadek, archeolog, zmarł niedawno. To właśnie po nim młody człowiek odziedziczył żyłkę do wszelkiej działalności związanej z odkrywaniem zaginionych zabytków dawnej cywilizacji oraz najróżniejszych ukrytych skarbów. Gdy staruszek umarł, mężczyzna postawił sobie za cel znalezienie skarbu pirata Störtebekera, którego jego dziadek szukał przez znaczną część życia.
Z zamyślenia wyrwał go ból w nodze. Gdy spojrzał w dół, zorientował się, że powodem dyskomfortu była sprężyna wystająca z obicia fotela. „Cóż, zdaje się, że niedługo będę musiał pozbyć się dziadkowego fotela. Nie da się go już naprawić… Szkoda!” pomyślał, wstając. W chwili, gdy poprawiał sprężynę, spod poduszki fotela wypadł kawałek papieru. Były na nim zapisane ciągi liczb. Przyjrzawszy się im dokładnie, Paweł pobiegł do sypialni, wyciągnął z regału stare wydanie „Wyspy Skarbów”, i zaczął je przeglądać. Po jakimś czasie popędził do kuchni i objął swoją żonę, krzycząc:
– Jesteśmy bogaci, kochanie!
Co takiego znajdowało się na kartce, którą znalazł Paweł?
Dziadek Pawła wiedział, że mężczyzna będzie po jego śmierci wspominać czasy, gdy razem czytali powieść Stevensona. Postanowił więc użyć jej do zakodowania wiadomości „Znalazłem skarb Störtebekera” i wskazówek, jak do tego skarbu dotrzeć. Ciągi liczb stanowiły wskazówkę, gdzie w książce znajdowały się litery tworzące kolejne słowa wiadomości. Pierwszy człon każdego ciągu był numerem strony, drugi wskazywał numer wersu, a ostatni – pozycję litery w wersie. Odcyfrowawszy wskazówki starego archeologa, Paweł mógł dotrzeć do bogactwa.

„Pawełek, come to me!” Grandfather sat in his chair and opened the „Treasure Island” by Robert Luis Stevenson on the page on which the second chapter began. The little boy came running from the next room and jumped on the man’s knees.
„So, shall we read on?”
„Yes!”
„So let’s get started…”
The present day, 30-year-old Paul fondly remembered his seven-year-old self listening to the adventures of the pirates with his breath bated. His grandfather, an archaeologist, has died recently. It was from him that young man inherited streak to all activities related to the discovery of the lost relics of former civilizations and various hidden treasures. When the old man died, the man has set himself the goal of finding the treasure of the pirate Störtebeker, for which his grandfather had been looking for a large part of his life.
The pain brought him out from his pensiveness. When he looked down, he realized that the reason of the discomfort was the spring protruding from the cushion. „Well, it seems that soon I’ll have to get rid of grandpa’s armchair. It can’t be fixed anymore… Too bad!” he thought, standing up. At a time when he was changing the position of the spring, a piece of paper fell out from under the cushion. There were sequences of numbers written down on it. After studying them closely, Paweł ran into the bedroom, pulled the old edition of „Treasure Island” out from the rack and began to browse through it. After some time, he rushed to the kitchen and embracing his wife, shouting:
„We are rich, honey!”
What was on the piece of paper that Paweł found?
Paweł’s grandfather knew that after his death, the men would reminisce on the times when they read Stevenson’s novel together. So he decided to use it to encrypt a message, „I found the treasure of Störtebeker” and tips on how to get to the treasure. Sequences of numbers were a clue on where in the book the letters of the subsequent words of the message were. The first part of each sequence was the page number, the second showed the number of the verse, and the last – the position of the letters in the verse. Having deciphered hints of the old archaeologist, Paul could reach the wealth.
