Po sukcesie wcześniejszych zagadek na temat Marka Twaina i Arthura Conan Doyle’a postanowiłam napisać kolejną, tym razem na podstawie anegdoty z życia francuskiego poety i pisarza, który tworzył pod pseudonimem Anatole France. Był to jeden z najsłynniejszych francuskich literatów, porównywany do Voltaire’a. Ciekawe, czy i tym razem uda wam się domyślić się, jak zakończyła się opisana sytuacja… A więc zaczynajmy!
France poszedł kiedyś na przyjęcie i spotkał tam pewną damę, która… no cóż, nie była już najmłodsza. Było jednak widać, że w dawnych, lepszych dla siebie czasach musiała ona być lokalną pięknością. Kobieta ta zapytała go w trakcie rozmowy, ile dałby jej lat. Po zastanowieniu, pisarz odpowiedział jej słowami: „Sądząc po zębach – osiemnaście, sądząc po ślicznych włosach – dziewiętnaście, a po figurze – czternaście.” Dama zdziwiła się nieco, ale – chcąc kontynuować rozmowę – wyraziła wdzięczność za komplement, po czym poprosiła France’a o powiedzenie jej ile, według niego, ma ona lat „tak w ogóle”. Otrzymana odpowiedź popsuła jej nastrój na resztę wieczoru. Dlaczego?
France powiedział do tej damy: „Tak w ogóle? Przecież powiedziałem. Osiemnaście dodać dziewiętnaście i dodać czternaście to razem pięćdziesiąt jeden.”

France went to a party one day and met a lady there, who was… well, not the youngest anymore. However, it was evident that in old times, better for herself, she must have been a local beauty. The woman asked him during the conversation how many years of age he would give her. After reflection, the writer answered her with the words: „Judging by your teeth – eighteen, judging by your pretty hair – nineteen, and by your figure – fourteen.” The lady was a bit surprised, but – wanting to continue the conversation – she expressed her gratitude for the compliment, and then asked France how many years of age he would give her „in total”. The answer she received spoiled her mood for the rest of the evening. Why?
France said to this lady: „In total? I have said it. Eighteen and nineteen and fourteen add up to a total of fifty-one.”
